ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ISLAM

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Islam & AI Repository
JOIN OUR WHATSAPP GROUP
Welcome to the 'AI and Islam' Research Group under The Muslim Researchers' Network

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has introduced numerous opportunities and challenges across various sectors of society. Within religious contexts, especially in Islam, integrating AI presents unique ethical and theological considerations. This research group aims to delve into questions at the intersection of AI and Islam, focusing on ethical implications, theological considerations, and the potential for technological advancements that align with Islamic principles.

Our mission
This is a research group whose aim is to be part of the active intellectual debate on AI by defining the right questions at the interface of Islam and AI, producing scholarly works, and organizing seminars and conferences. Among of the goals of this RG is:

i. Educate ourselves about AI without underestimating AI’s capabilities.

ii. Explore what it means/how to be human and Muslim in an age of AI without underestimating the capabilities of human beings based on an Islamic worldview ?

Note: This is NOT an anti-AI group. AI is a reality, and our goal is to define how to embrace progress while maintaining our God-centered mission on Earth, as defined by an Islamic worldview based on principles like Truth, Justice, and preserving the dignity of all human beings.

Research Directions:
1. Islam for AI: What contributions can an Islamic worldview, emphasizing Truth, Justice, and the nobility of human beings, make to the current debate on AI's role in society? Should we view human beings merely as data products to serve the agendas of large technology companies? Should we accept the premise that Artificial Intelligence is superior to human intelligence, and that data understands us better than we understand ourselves? What about Transhumanism?

From an Islamic perspective, "human beings are seen as noble, symmetrical forms endowed with souls. These souls, when freed from the distractions of senses and passions, can become windows onto the Reality that this world merely reflects in a distorted manner"*. How does this view of humanity guide the ethics of AI? What theological perspectives within Islam address AI, exploring questions of free will, consciousness, and AI's successful integration in society?

2. AI for Islam: Conversely, how can AI assist Islamic scholarship? How can it be used to combat Islamophobia? What are the ethical considerations of integrating AI into Islamic societies, particularly concerning privacy, autonomy, justice, and decision-making? What opportunities exist for utilizing AI in ways that benefit Islamic communities, such as in education, healthcare, and environmental stewardship, in adherence to Islamic ethical principles? How can we develop guidelines for the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies in accordance with Islamic teachings?
